Martha Ellen Dennison Bond, 99, of Kennett Square died Sunday, July 2, 2006 at the Pocopson Home following a brief illness. Born November 13, 1906 in Stricklesville, she was the daughter of the late George Dennison of Perrymen, Maryland and Amanda Matilda Black Dennison from Summit Bridge, Delaware.

When Marth was 7 years old the family moved from Delaware to Kennett Square where the family took up residence on Mulberry Street.

Martha attended elementary school at Mary D. Lang on Mulberry Street. Although she left school in her early teens out of economic necessity, Martha had a great enthusiasm for reading and a lifelong love of learning which she passed on to all her children.

In 1923 Martha married the late Albert Bond of Kennett Square.

Mrs. Bond worked in Kennett Square and neighboring towns for more than sixty years doing domestic work for private families. While working full time she raised four daughters. A number of grandchildren also grew up in Mrs. Bond's home.

She was a lifelong member of Bethel A.M.E. Church of Kennett Square where she was a member of the choir, the Missionary Society and the Usher Board.

She raised her children on Linden Street in a multicultural neighborhood where Mrs. Bond taught her children to be proud of their own heritage and to also take lively interest in the religious and ethnic diversity of their neighbors.

Mrs. Bond was well known for her deep attachment to animals. If an emergency arose and family members could not recall the location of the private home where she was working, the family dog Tiki was unleashed and would always quickly find her.

For the last decade of her life, she resided at Pocopson Home where she participated in current events, field trips, bingo, birdwatching and weekly church services. She loved visitors and had a special spot in the common area where she could see everyone coming and going. A highlight of her time at Pocopson was a surprise 95th birthday which was attended by dozens of relatives spanning 5 generations.

She is survived by two daughters: Margaret Brown of West Chester and Joyce Dennison of Baltimore; two son-in-laws: Lee Westley and Linwood Boyer, both of Kennett Square; 16 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren and 21 great great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by two daughters, Clara E. Boyer and Elva Mae Westley and her life's companion, Lindley "Linkie" Helmsley.
